It must not hurt them because 'gabby' is 28yrs old,and 'diva' is 19.How do you stop a horse from cribbing on a fence? I think if ours had to be stalled they would go nuts,because they never have been! They will lay down and sleep in the barn at night if its nasty,but usually would rather be outside, as they were intended to be. Then we will close the gates on the entryway.Every year I say I'm going to put a plastic curtain over thier doorway.like you see on loading docks,but it never happens.Also we do not have stalls,the building is open inside with just the round bale feeder in one corner and the tank in the oppisite one. Our animals have free choice as to be in or out unless its going to be a really bad snowstorm. There are no strong drafts and the 'entryway' is always open. The idea was to shield them from the wind and snow drifting as much as possible,and it works very well. The slideing door faces NW, which is where all the winter wind and snow comes from,the paddock opening faces SE, which is where any winter sun would be. On the side thats open to the paddock, I built an 'entryway' that is 8x12 with a 3' oh on its open side. I don't know about you but that would make a pretty sweet home or workshop etc in the future too

It is the traditional way of building barns which has existed for over a millennium and is strong. use some untreated wood safe for animals for the slat walls in the stallsįinally, if you have the money you might want to look into timber-framing. for areas which may receive light rainwater use black walnut, black locust, heart cypress or cedar etc. chances are you will never need to replace it use aluminum or copper flashing where needed in the above ground structure use galvanized flashing if you want a termite shield at the base use galvanized or stainless fasteners to join the non-PT structure to the PT wood use PT wood only in ground contact areas Personally, I wouldn't trust it on a critical structure such as a roof or walls which could collapse if the metal loses its strength. It is much safer than much of the competition or standard PT wood which, as others have mentioned is very corrosive.
